Seal meat - is seal halal or haram>?

Seal Meat
By Mufti Ebrahim Desai

Q.) Is the meat of Seal Halal? If yes, then how about the extracts from its glands? [Ayub]

A.) According to the Hanafi Madhab, all water creatures besides those falling in the category of fish (Arabic samak) are impermissible. (Shaami vol.6 pg.306-7; HM Saeed)
The Seal, being a carnivorous mammal is not classified as a fish, hence not permissible. Below is an excerpt taken from the Encyclopaedia Britannica:
"...In Zoology, any of numerous species of carnivorous aquatic mammals that live chiefly in cold regions and have limbs modified into webbed flippers for use in swimming. Together with Walruses, Seals make the suborder Pinnipedia of the order Carnivora."
And Allah Ta'ala Knows Best

  1. salamo aleikom wr wb

great post. i was wondering about this.
Alhamdulilah, Islam doesn't support the killing of dolphins and other sea mammals.
it breaks my heart to see so much bloodsched of creatures that look so adorable and like to play with humans =(

  3. According to majority view, whatever lives and dies in the sea is halal.

  4. majority view of who?? people of your neighbourhood??

List names if u know what u are talking about..

And besides.. Seals live partially in the sea and partially on land..

    Mostly on land really..

So they sometimes die on shore and sometimes on land..

  5. Sea water's purity is based on the following hadith: Abu Hurairah related that a man asked the Messenger of Allah, upon whom be peace, "O Messenger of Allah, we sail on the ocean and we carry only a little water. If we use it for ablution, we will have to go thirsty. May we use sea water for ablution?" Said the Messenger of Allah, upon whom be peace, "Its (the sea) water is pure and its dead (animals) are lawful (i.e., they can be eaten without any prescribed slaughtering)." This hadith is related by "the five." At-Tirmizhi calls it hassan sahih, and al-Bukhari says it is sahih. According to the above hadith the seal would be halal. The whale is a carnivorous mammal and there is Sahih hadith where the prophet Muhammad s.a.w. ate whale. I have lived with the Eskimos in the Arctic...you are wrong Trusted Creating the seal spend most of their time in the Ocean. The pictures of them basking in the sun are pictures taken when they can be easily viewed... that is all. These pictured don't denote where they spend the most of their time. I agree with what Anonymous said. When ever I return to the Arctic it will be my pleasure to sit and eat with the Eskimos. And for the pleasure of those would like to know... Alhamdulillah there are Eskimo Muslims and the first Masjid in Alaska is being worked on now. May Allah guide us all... Ameen

  6. It states clearly, Hanafi madhab.Indonesians, are Shafiis and, it is only Hanafis that exclude water creatures with fins and Scales as Haraam.

For Shafiis, Hanbalis and Malikis, PRAWNS, CATFISH, OCTOPUS, are HALAL.

For SEAL i think we need to know whether it lives 50:50 in land and water or not. If it lives more in water, then its considered water creature and halal.
